Perugia International Journalism Festival 2012

The next edition of the annual Perugia International Journalism Festival will be held on April 25-29, 2012, in Perugia, Italy.

The annual Perugia International Journalism Festival is the leading journalism event in Italy. It is an open invitation to listen to and network with the best of world journalism. The leitmotiv is one of informality and accessibility, designed to appeal to journalists, aspiring journalists and those interested in the role of the media in society. Simultaneous translation into English and Italian is provided. The festival is open to the public free of charge.

The festival was founded in 2006 by Arianna Ciccone and Christopher Potter. The objective? To set up an event which would break the mould – not another institutional forum or media industry get-together but rather an opportunity for you to engage with leading journalists from all over the world. Free. With content designed to appeal across the spectrum. The media plays such a fundamental role in our daily lives yet an event designed explicitly to bring together top-drawer media protagonists and the general public didn’t seem to exist. Literary festivals, science festivals, music festivals abounded. But where was the journalism festival? Nowhere. So we created it.

The 2007 first edition was a modest affair but by the 2011 fifth edition there were some 150 different events in the 5–day programme and more than 500 speakers, 250 accredited journalists and 200 volunteers in attendance. Aggregate festival audiences totalled about 30,000 despite our promotion being exclusively online due to budget constraints. The 2012 sixth edition will be the biggest and best yet.

All festival events are free entry. Of all the festival events, only the workshops require registration (in order to maintain participant numbers at a pre-established level).

Paid Journalism Internships 2012 at Associated Press

The Associated Press is offering paid journalism internships for the summer of 2012 in eight U.S. cities (including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.) and 10 international locations (including London, Jerusalem, Seoul, Mexico City, Rome, Bangkok, Johannesburg, New Delhi, Rio de Janeiro and Moscow).

The interns will contribute to AP’s text, video, photos and interactives report for 12 weeks this summer. Although a primary format may be declared – depending on interest and ability – the internships will provide experience and training in all four. Interns will attend and contribute to all-format editorial meetings. Assignments will be made by a trainer who will also provide performance appraisals during the course of the internship.

Interns will be expected to be fast thinkers and show creativity and strong news judgment. They should be strong storytellers who are able to recognize interesting news elements, suggest their own story ideas and angles and incorporate them in stories, video and still images. Interns should be comfortable interacting with a diverse group of co-workers and interview subjects.

Interns will be expected to keep up-to-date with news in the city or region and its relevance to national and international affairs. Responsibilities will include tracking down information, conducting interviews, monitoring social media, and covering breaking news stories, either by phone or going to the scene. Assignments may include covering general, sports, business or entertainment spot news or features.

Interns will contribute to the text news report – reporting and writing their own stories under the direct supervision of an editor. Editors will train interns on such areas as interview techniques, sourcing, databases and AP style.  Interns will be expected to become familiar with - and abide by - the AP’s statement of values and principles governing ethics.

Staff photographers will supervise interns on visual storytelling techniques. Where possible interns will accompany staff photographers on assignments, assist with arrangements in the field, and shoot photos. Interns will be trained in the use of photo editing software – Photoshop and Photomechanic – as well as transmission.  Training will include photojournalism ethics, especially on authenticity.

Interns will assist in the production of video stories, including non-linear editing and writing story summaries and scripts for broadcast. They will research and set up video news and feature stories and occasionally join location shoots, or do their own shooting, if they possess the required skills. Interns may also assist with content management and translations.  

Applicants must be:

1. Current full-time students within two years of earning an undergraduate degree or
2. Current full-time graduate students or
3. Students who graduated December 2011 or later.

• Must be able to show proof of legal authorization to participate in a 12-week internship in the assigned country prior to the start of the internship.
• Must have demonstrated proficiency speaking and writing in the English language and command of the local language for the assigned country.
• Good general knowledge of U.S. and international affairs.
• Good writing skills and the ability to recognize grammatical and factual errors.
• Relevant coursework or experience in a cross-format environment (text, video, photos, interactive graphics, etc.) is highly desirable.
• Knowledge of online and social media news venues.
• Highly organized and attentive to detail; able to multi-task and manage projects as assigned.
• Self-starter with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.

• A 300-word autobiographical essay on this topic: “The Associated Press seeks to recruit and retain a workforce that embodies a wide range of talents, experiences, achievements and journalistic skills. Please describe the qualities and accomplishments you would bring to the company as an intern.”
• A resume and cover letter (please include your projected graduation date).
• Three to five examples of your work (links to a website of your clips, photos, multimedia work and video are preferred).
• Two letters of reference, one from a professor or faculty adviser on college/university letterhead and the second from a prior internship or employer.

European Youth Media Convention 2011 - "Whistleblowing - A New Competition for Journalists?"

Journalists are facing competition: Platforms like wikileaks reveal scandals, allow unprecedented insights into political strategies, and begin to impinge on the role of the journalist. Apparently, the public receives an additional level of control and knowledge.But is unconditional transparency of political systems, that so-called whistleblowers usually strive for, always beneficial for democracy? And how should journalists respond if they want to prevent a takeover of their distinctive role?

 

During this year's European Youth Media Convention, which will take place between the 3rd and the 6th of August in Berlin (Germany), we will try to find answers to these questions and outline the future for young media makers. Participants will have the opportunity to meet up with 39 other young media makers from all over Europe and outline the situations of their own country.

You can attend lectures and discuss with experts. In addition, you will get the chance to produce journalistic print-, video-, audio- or photography content according to your interest at the event.

There is no participation fee. Free board and lodging is provided. Travel costs are not reimbursed.

Deutsche Welle's tri-medial traineeships have long had an excellent reputation. DW-AKADEMIE offers young journalists professional, international editorial training for radio, television and Internet. 1. Practical Training
Deutsche Welle's training program is geared toward real life situations. In the course of 18 months, the trainees go through various German language departments of the Deutsche Welle in Bonn and Berlin. They can also gather practical experience at DW Studio Brussels or DW-Hauptstadtstudio Berlin, DW-TV's studio overlooking parliament in Germany's capital city.

2. Compact Seminars
Practical training is supplemented with a total of three one-month seminars at DW-AKADEMIE. Here, trainees have the opportunity to fine-tune their journalistic knowledge and skills with in-house and guest trainers. The topics include the following:

• journalistic formats
• research methods and presenting techniques
• working with texts, sounds and pictures
• designing Web sites
• basic training in video journalism
• journalistic ethics and press law

3. Posting of Choice
Each trainee has the opportunity to select a one-month external posting at a location of their choice. Whether it's a broadcaster or a different kind of institution, at home or abroad -- the posting of choice is a unique opportunity to give your traineeship a personal touch that could prove decisive in the future.

Investigative Journalism Conference

Investigative journalists from the former USSR, Eastern Europe, Balkans, Caucasus, Middle East, Asia, Africa and Latin America are now welcome to apply for grants that will cover their travel and stay at the Global Investigative Journalism Conference 2010 at Geneva, Switzerland.

The organizers are particularly looking for journalists who are willing to show and share their experiences and work through presentations at the conference. If you are able to demonstrate how you worked with your life's best investigative story, you might pick up free tickets and stay at the conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

The main focus during seminars will be journalistic work methods, how journalists are using their skills, patience, eagerness to dig up dirt and neat techniques to get in touch with sources, better research material and in the end, good stories that make a difference. The conference will also cover how difficult it is to perform investigative journalism in certain parts of the world.

GIJC 2010 is going to be a unique place to do networking and get to know your own global contact network. 

To apply, supply the application with your CV, a short summary of your work in the field of investigative journalism and personal references. It will also help the organizers if you can get references from organizations working with investigative journalism.

Master Scholarship in Media Studies

Young media specialists, journalism students and journalists from all countries are invited to apply for International Media Studies Master’s Program in Bonn, Germany. The program is sponsored by German Media Group Deutsche Welle, the University of Bonn and other organizations.

Application deadline: 30 April 2010

Eligibility: students from Africa, Asia, Latin America or Eastern Europe

Financial Assistance/Scholarship: Full scholarships will be awarded to ten applicants from Africa, Asia, Latin America or Eastern Europe

The four-semester, full-time program combines theory with training in practical journalism skills, and covers such topics as media and development, media economics, and communication science. The program ends with a master’s thesis and colloquium. Successful graduates receive a Master of Arts (M.A.) Degree.

Applicants are required to submit the following documents:

* completed application form

* curriculum vitae

* statement of purpose

* one passport-size photograph

* copy of passport

The following documents (both the copies of the certificates and the translations into German or English) need to be certified :

* academic degree(s) including transcripts

* proof of at least one year’s work experience in the field of media after your degree

If you are an applicant from China, Vietnam and Mongolia you need to submit original Certificate of APS.

Language Requirements

If your first language is not English, you need to provide evidence of your English language skills by submitting one of the following:

* TOEFL : paper-based: score 557 or computer- based: score 220 or internet- based: score 83.

* IELTS : an overall band score of at least 6.0 or

* confirming letter from your previous university, if your first degree course was taught in English.

If your first language is not German and you have not completed a German language degree course, we require one of the following German language proficiency tests for Higher Education:

* DSH level 1

* TestDaF level 3, 3, 3, 3 (www.testdaf.de) or

* Goethe Zertifikat level B2.

Scholarships will be granted after the application deadline by a selection committee comprised of representatives from the University of Bonn, Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences, DAAD and Deutsche Welle.
