Three-Month Internship at INTERIGHTS in London

INTERIGHTS is pleased to invite applications for a three month funded internship starting at the beginning of June 2013, for a lawyer/academic working on LGBTI Human Rights in Europe. The precise nature of activities will depend on organisational and programme priorities at the time of the placement; however, it is likely that the main areas in which experience will be offered will include:

• Legal research on international and comparative human rights law and practice relating to LGBTI Human Rights to support the preparation of briefs before domestic courts and the European Court of Human Rights;
• Assistance on INTERIGHTS’ publications on LGBTI Human Rights;
• Where possible, attendance at meetings with human rights practitioners, lectures, or visits to other international / national human rights organisations based in London.

The three-month internship will begin in early June 2013 and will be based in London.

Requirements

The successful applicant will:

• have a degree in law;
• have good experience of working in a human rights NGO as a practising lawyer or in academia;
• have demonstrable experience of working with the European Convention on Human Rights and the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights;
• have worked on and have an interest in working on LGBTI Human Rights (familiarity with issues related to the human rights of transgender people will be an advantage);
• be familiar with regional and international human rights instruments and mechanisms;
• demonstrate strong research, analytical and writing skills;
• and have good spoken and written English (knowledge of a Central and Eastern European language and/or of French will be an advantage);
• have the right to work in the UK.

Remuneration

• The intern will receive a monthly grant of £1,300.

Internships at Greenpeace International in Amsterdam

The Research Unit at Greenpeace International is offering a 6 month internship position. Research internships are based in Amsterdam, Netherlands as full-time positions (40 hours per week) for a fixed term of 6 months. This internship option is ongoing. Monitor, capture, filter and organize information and market intelligence into databases for briefs and reports to ensure strategic information is available for Greenpeace’s campaigns and projects. This role is very detail orientated, involves multiple concurrent daily deadlines and administrative tasks within the research unit.

Eligibility of candidates

Academic background in natural or social sciences (minimum of an equivalent Bachelors level) required. Masters, or higher, in natural or social sciences, with environmental focus, preferred.

Paid Translations Traineeships in EU Parlament

Parliament offers several options for traineeships within its Secretariat, to provide opportunities for vocational training and for learning more about what the European Parliament is and does.

Paid traineeships are awarded solely to graduates of universities or equivalent institutions. Their purpose is to enable trainees to supplement the knowledge which they acquired during their studies and to familiarise themselves with the activities of the European Union and, in particular, the European Parliament.

Applicants for a paid translation traineeship must:

-be nationals of a Member State of the European Union or of a candidate country (Croatia, Iceland, Macedonia, Montenegro or Turkey);
-be aged 18 or over on the traineeship starting date;
-not have been awarded any other paid traineeship, or have been in paid employment for more than four consecutive weeks, with a European institution or a Member or political group of the European Parliament;
-have obtained, before the deadline for the submission of applications, a university degree after a course of study of at least three years’ duration
-have perfect knowledge of one of the official languages of the European Union or of the official language of an applicant country and thorough knowledge of two other official languages of the European Union.

Paid translation traineeships are awarded for a period of three months. On an exceptional basis, they may be extended for a maximum period of three months.

Paid Journalism Internships 2012 at Associated Press

The Associated Press is offering paid journalism internships for the summer of 2012 in eight U.S. cities (including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.) and 10 international locations (including London, Jerusalem, Seoul, Mexico City, Rome, Bangkok, Johannesburg, New Delhi, Rio de Janeiro and Moscow).

The interns will contribute to AP’s text, video, photos and interactives report for 12 weeks this summer. Although a primary format may be declared – depending on interest and ability – the internships will provide experience and training in all four. Interns will attend and contribute to all-format editorial meetings. Assignments will be made by a trainer who will also provide performance appraisals during the course of the internship.

Interns will be expected to be fast thinkers and show creativity and strong news judgment. They should be strong storytellers who are able to recognize interesting news elements, suggest their own story ideas and angles and incorporate them in stories, video and still images. Interns should be comfortable interacting with a diverse group of co-workers and interview subjects.

Interns will be expected to keep up-to-date with news in the city or region and its relevance to national and international affairs. Responsibilities will include tracking down information, conducting interviews, monitoring social media, and covering breaking news stories, either by phone or going to the scene. Assignments may include covering general, sports, business or entertainment spot news or features.

Interns will contribute to the text news report – reporting and writing their own stories under the direct supervision of an editor. Editors will train interns on such areas as interview techniques, sourcing, databases and AP style.  Interns will be expected to become familiar with - and abide by - the AP’s statement of values and principles governing ethics.

Staff photographers will supervise interns on visual storytelling techniques. Where possible interns will accompany staff photographers on assignments, assist with arrangements in the field, and shoot photos. Interns will be trained in the use of photo editing software – Photoshop and Photomechanic – as well as transmission.  Training will include photojournalism ethics, especially on authenticity.

Interns will assist in the production of video stories, including non-linear editing and writing story summaries and scripts for broadcast. They will research and set up video news and feature stories and occasionally join location shoots, or do their own shooting, if they possess the required skills. Interns may also assist with content management and translations.  

Applicants must be:

1. Current full-time students within two years of earning an undergraduate degree or
2. Current full-time graduate students or
3. Students who graduated December 2011 or later.

• Must be able to show proof of legal authorization to participate in a 12-week internship in the assigned country prior to the start of the internship.
• Must have demonstrated proficiency speaking and writing in the English language and command of the local language for the assigned country.
• Good general knowledge of U.S. and international affairs.
• Good writing skills and the ability to recognize grammatical and factual errors.
• Relevant coursework or experience in a cross-format environment (text, video, photos, interactive graphics, etc.) is highly desirable.
• Knowledge of online and social media news venues.
• Highly organized and attentive to detail; able to multi-task and manage projects as assigned.
• Self-starter with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.

Traineeship at European Centre For Modern Languages

The European Centre For Modern Languages (ECML) in Graz, Austria, has been offering traineeships since 1997. The scheme has proved a highly successful means of developing further contacts between the Centre and its member states. Recruiting young professionals from all over Europe to join its team for a short period both reinforces the Centre’s role as a place of international cooperation and promotes an atmosphere of intercultural learning. For the trainees it often represents their first experience of an international organisation. The scheme which the ECML now offers is the result of a learning process and is adapted to meet the needs both of the Centre and the trainees themselves. 

Duration & Traineeship Areas 
The ECML offers traineeships, lasting in general 6 months, twice a year. According to their field of interest applicants can choose the main area in which they would like to be involved (although the tasks will cover a wide variety of areas):
- organisation of events and meetings;
- documentation and resources;
- the Centre’s website;
- finances and general administration

Eligibility

Trainees should be graduate students preferably at postgraduate level. They should be plurilingual (English, French, German) and have adequate writing and computer skills as they will frequently be asked to translate official documents.

Allowance

Trainees receive an allowance from the Centre of approximately 686 Euros per month. This allowance is transferred by the Council of Europe at the end of each calendar month, i.e. if the trainee starts work on 1 July the payment will not arrive until 31 July. As this can be problematic at the start of the stay, particularly when a deposit and payment in advance is often required for accommodation,you will be offered a support facility to ensure that new arrivals do not have financial difficulties as a result of their traineeship.

A contribution of a maximum of 230 Euros is made towards travel costs from the trainee’s home country to and from Graz. Any travel invoices should be therefore be kept. Normally the reimbursement is made in two instalments – in the first and last month of the traineeship, together with the monthly allowance.

The Technology and General Services Department (TGS) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is offering internship opportunities. International Fellowships in Caucasus Research Resource Centers

The Caucasus Research Resource Centers program (CRRC) is a network of resource, research and training centers established in 2003 in the capital cities of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia with the goal of strengthening social science research and public policy analysis in the South Caucasus. A partnership between the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Eurasia Partnership Foundation, USAID and local universities, the CRRC network offers scholars and practitioners stable opportunities for integrated research, training and collaboration in the region.

International fellowships in Tbilisi, Georgia; Baku, Azerbaijan; and Yerevan, Armenia are offered on the rolling basis to the applicants having a strong interest and background in the social sciences. Small stipend to cover housing and food is provided; however we encourage candidates to seek outside funding. Duration of the fellowship program - at least 10 weeks. 

Qualifications

Applicants must have a strong interest and background in the social sciences (policy-related or think tank experience is a benefit); have completed two years of college course work by the time the internship begins (graduate students are highly encouraged to apply); be familiar with Microsoft programs (knowledge of statistical programs such as SPSS or Stata is desirable); have well-developed communication, teamwork and organizational skills; take initiative and work independently with little supervision; and be able to work in a complex environment in developing countries. 

Knowledge of Russian or a local language (Armenian, Azerbaijani, and Georgian) and experience in the NIS region is a plus. Candidates who have their own research agenda will be given priority. Applicants must be willing to commit to the internship for a minimum of 10 weeks. Candidates should specify if they have a country preference.

Description

In addition to its core activities, CRRC has a burgeoning number of research projects in which interns in the past have played a pivotal role. Duties may include but are not limited to conducting research (including interviewing local officials and community members and helping manage the questionnaire design process) and helping local researchers publish their findings; organizing social science trainings; updating CRRC's English language materials; preparing outreach materials; updating and managing databases; and organizing special events and conferences. There is also the opportunity to establish long-term cooperation with local researchers and policymakers, as well as learn Russian and/or a local language and conduct research during the course of the internship.

Research Associateships in Women/Gender Studies 2011-2012

The Five College Women’s Studies Research Center, founded as a site for scholarly activity on issues relating to women and gender, invites applications for its  research associateships for 2011-2012 from scholars and teachers at all levels of the educational system, as well as from artists, community organizers and political activists, both local and international. The project is a collaborative project of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

 

Conditions 

Open to feminist scholars, teachers, artists, writers, and activists from the United States and abroad. Associates are provided with offices in our spacious facility, library privileges, and the collegiality of a diverse community of feminists. The Center supports projects in all disciplines so long as they focus centrally on women or gender. Applications are accepted for either a semester or an academic year. During the period of appointment, Associates are expected to be in residence in the Five College area, and to attend weekly seminars and other FCWSRC events. Each Research Associate gives a public presentation on her work and is expected to participate actively in the daily life of the Center. No funding is attached to the Associateship.

Exchange Programme Eurodyssey

EURODYSSEY, the AER first programme, which was set up in 1985, aims at improving the chances of young Europeans to integrate into working life by offering them the opportunity of a work experience abroad. The Assembly of European Regions (AER), on the basis of the Founding Texts, implements the programme since its launch in 1985, in partnership with the Regions that are active in Eurodyssey. The AER is responsible for the general framework conditions of the programme as well as its general development and promotion.

Overview

Eurodyssée is an exchange programme between European Regions, which allows young job seekers aged between 18 and 30 to benefit from a traineeship placement abroad for a period between three to seven months.In a tripartite arrangement, the regional administrations that are members of the Eurodyssey programme will submit the young persons application and profile to potential employers of their network in order to find a work placement for him/her.

Objectives

1. to integrate young people from all horizons and educational backgrounds,
2. to gain professional experience,
3. to get an opportunity to improve their knowledge of a foreign language,
4. to put their social and cultural skills to the test,
5. to enhance their employability and facilitate their adjustment to the international labour market.

Accommodation
On arrival in the Hosting Region, either trainees are responsible to find accommodation (with the Region’s assistance) or the Region fully grants the accommodation. In the second option, trainees will be housed in one of the following (depending on availability):
- young workers hostel Student’s residence
- flat
- with a family

Financing 

- language course
- accommodation
- allowance or salary
- insurance cover

Trainees will either receive a grant or be paid a salary depending on how the Eurodyssée programme is run in the Region concerned. Bearing in mind the time the payment comes through, in some cases, trainees are advised to take enough money with them to cover their needs during the first month of the traineeship.

Insurance cover

An insurance policy covering personal accident, civil liability, and health and repatriation is taken out and financed for each trainee by the Eurodyssée general secretariat and the AER.

Monitoring

During their stay abroad, trainees are followed-up and assisted by the programme coordinators of the Hosting Region in dealing with all issues arising both at work and outside. Most Regions organise visits, excursions and events designed to help the trainees assimilate and appreciate the culture of the host Region. In the month following the end of the work placement, trainees must submit a report to their home and/or Hosting Region. In general, the traineeship certificate is issued subject to reception of this report.

Internship Opportunities at Deutsche Welle

Internships of one to two months are open to students of journalism at German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.

Internships with Deutsche Welle are offered in all departments in which journalistic work is carried out: DW-RADIO, DW-TV, DW-WORLD.DE, DW-AKADEMIE and the communications department. Deutsche Welle places great emphasis on involving the trainee as much as possible in an editorial department’s day-to-day work. The more practical experience the trainee already has, the better his or her chances of being allowed to carry out journalistic or editorial tasks. Applicants must have completed at least three semesters of his/her studies and they must possess some experience of journalism in radio, TV, or multimedia.

Estonian Free Press Intership 

Estonian Free Press is looking for interns to cover different positions in the magazine starting from January 2011. Applicants must be able to work at least five full days per week (in case of full time internships) or five half days (in case of part time internships) from the month of January. They will participate to the normal daily editorial routine which includes attending conferences, events and meeting with key people of the Estonian public life.

Responsibilities include assisting editors with research for current and upcoming issues, fact-checking, proofreading, producing articles, conducting interviews and participating in the editorial planning meeting.

The ideal candidate will possess: excellent English communication skills, meticulous attention to detail, with the ability to juggle multiple duties. This person must have experience in Word and Excel. Editorial internships at Estonian Free Press are open to graduates and university students – a major in journalism is an advantage but it is not mandatory.

Interns will be requested to participate to the magazine’s daily tasks as all other members of staff do and they will receive practical experience in the use of publishing software and search engine optimization.

Eur@dioNantes European Radio Station - Call for Interns

Eur@dioNantes, a European Radio station based in Nantes and supported by the European Commission, has recently launched the selection process of its upcoming European team of interns.

Eur@dioNantes is currently looking for high-level bilingual (in Fench) students in political science, journalism or European studies who are interested in European issues and who would like to get a formative experience in the world of New European Media.

The internship will run from 15th February 2011 to 13 July 2011 in Nantes. Application documents should be returned before the end of January 2011. The interns will receive a monthly allowance of about 417€.

The Eur@dioNantes team is composed of several young journalists who come from all over Europe and are trained at the radio station in Nantes. They are coached by French professional journalists, who have had years of experience in journalism. CEPR International Program Intern in Washington

The Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR), Washington DC, is currently looking for a full-time Research and Outreach Intern for Spring 2011. The internship will start in early-to-mid January and end in mid-to-late May, 2011. CEPR was established in 1999 to promote democratic debate on the most important economic and social issues that affect people’s lives. It is an independent nonpartisan think tank based in Washington, DC. CEPR is committed to presenting issues in an accurate and understandable manner, so that the public is better prepared to choose among the various policy options.

The intern will assist with a variety of research, outreach, and communications activities related to the U.S. economy and domestic policy. This may include outreach to the press, advocacy organizations and Congress, along with some research on upcoming papers and economic opinion pieces. Other tasks may include communications duties such as generating website content and tracking CEPR’s appearances in the media. The responsibilities of interns vary based on their interests and experience, as well as the particular issues that CEPR is working on at the time. Interns will have the opportunity to attend relevant events around Washington, DC.

Eligibility and Qualifications

We are looking for applicants with:
* General understanding of economics, international relations, and democracy issues and an interest in economic justice.
* Previous research, data and/or outreach experience is considered as an asset
* Past interns with strong economics or foreign policy (including Master’s degrees) will have the opportunity to engage in serious research, and those with strong organizing or outreach experience will have event management opportunities

IHS Journalism Internship Program, USA

The IHS Journalism Internship Program (Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason University, USA) places aspiring journalists who support liberty at media companies and non-profit investigative newsrooms. Talented writers and communicators have the opportunity to learn or improve their journalism skills and expand their professional network. Opportunities are offered year-round, during the spring, summer, and fall.

Journalists can advance liberty by producing balanced stories incorporating the ideas of individual rights, free markets, and peace. An IHS intern who understands spontaneous order and public choice theory will produce stories far different and more unique than a journalist steeped in the notion of central planning by altruistic, government officials.

A Comprehensive Program

As part of the program, all interns (fall, spring, and summer) attend our weeklong journalism workshop during the summer. ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability – is offering a post-graduate internship in communications in the World Secretariat in Bonn, Germany to support ICLEI’s global communications work. ICLEI  is a worldwide association of more than 1,200 metropolitan regions, cities, towns, counties and municipal associations in 70 countries that are dedicated to implementing sustainable development. ICLEI provides technical consulting, training, and information services to build capacity, share knowledge, and support local government in the implementation of sustainable development at the local level.

Tasks and responsibilities of the intern:

The intern will support the communications team in general with internal and external communications, developing and running global campaigns and organizing press and media work; specifically:
- with researching and writing communications materials such as news bits, press releases, brochures, case studies, etc.
- assisting with website maintenance, web content and online newsletters
- supporting the planning and coordinating of direct mail campaigns
- maintaining media relations and developing the basis for furthering media outreach by researching targeted media contacts, publications and associations
- maintaining and expanding the publications and media library.

Elegibility

- degree in a relevant subject such as Communications, Public Relations, Journalism; or with a strong interest and some experience in communications work with a degree in Politics, Public Policy, International Relations/Development or similar

Terms and conditions

- The internship position is available from November 2010 at the ICLEI World Secretariat in Bonn, Germany. The duration will be six months. The internship is within ICLEI’s Communication team, the intern reports to the Manager Communications & Dialogues;
- ICLEI offers interns a cost compensation of Euro 640, i.e., about Euro 525 after tax and social insurance fees;
- Workings hours: 40h per week; 2 days of paid leave per month (i.e., 12 days for six months internship);
- Working language: English;

Each year the Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships (AFPF) brings approximately ten mid-career reporters and editors  – usually between the ages of 25 and 35 – to America for a six-month, in-depth, practical introduction to the professional and ethical standards of the U.S. print media. 

Among those who have succeeded are Fellows who have become top editors and newsroom managers, founders of news outlets and public relation firms, section heads, bureau chiefs, chief or foreign correspondents, and university professors.
