Paid Translations Traineeships in EU Parlament

Parliament offers several options for traineeships within its Secretariat, to provide opportunities for vocational training and for learning more about what the European Parliament is and does.

Paid traineeships are awarded solely to graduates of universities or equivalent institutions. Their purpose is to enable trainees to supplement the knowledge which they acquired during their studies and to familiarise themselves with the activities of the European Union and, in particular, the European Parliament.

Applicants for a paid translation traineeship must:

-be nationals of a Member State of the European Union or of a candidate country (Croatia, Iceland, Macedonia, Montenegro or Turkey);
-be aged 18 or over on the traineeship starting date;
-not have been awarded any other paid traineeship, or have been in paid employment for more than four consecutive weeks, with a European institution or a Member or political group of the European Parliament;
-have obtained, before the deadline for the submission of applications, a university degree after a course of study of at least three years’ duration
-have perfect knowledge of one of the official languages of the European Union or of the official language of an applicant country and thorough knowledge of two other official languages of the European Union.

Paid translation traineeships are awarded for a period of three months. On an exceptional basis, they may be extended for a maximum period of three months.

Application period

15 June – 15 August (midnight) to submit your application.
Trainership period starting from 1st of January 2013
We advise you not to wait until the last day to apply, to prevent the system from becoming overloaded because there are a large number of applications. 

Remuneration

Translation traineeships are assigned to Luxembourg.

For guidance, in 2011 the scholarship amounted to EUR 1 213.55 a month. 

If you are preselected

Please note the conditions for admission. If you are preselected, the following will be requested as supporting documents:
-the application form, duly completed and signed,
-a copy of your passport or identity card,
-copies of your diplomas and certificates, and
-a copy of your university marks (results), if you have them.

It is not necessary to send these supporting documents at this stage. The documents will only be requested if you pass the preselection stage. If you are preselected for a traineeship, your application will be deemed valid only if you provide the full set of documents mentioned above.

Paid Journalism Internships 2012 at Associated Press

The Associated Press is offering paid journalism internships for the summer of 2012 in eight U.S. cities (including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.) and 10 international locations (including London, Jerusalem, Seoul, Mexico City, Rome, Bangkok, Johannesburg, New Delhi, Rio de Janeiro and Moscow).

The interns will contribute to AP’s text, video, photos and interactives report for 12 weeks this summer. Although a primary format may be declared – depending on interest and ability – the internships will provide experience and training in all four. Interns will attend and contribute to all-format editorial meetings. Assignments will be made by a trainer who will also provide performance appraisals during the course of the internship.

Interns will be expected to be fast thinkers and show creativity and strong news judgment. They should be strong storytellers who are able to recognize interesting news elements, suggest their own story ideas and angles and incorporate them in stories, video and still images. Interns should be comfortable interacting with a diverse group of co-workers and interview subjects.

Interns will be expected to keep up-to-date with news in the city or region and its relevance to national and international affairs. Responsibilities will include tracking down information, conducting interviews, monitoring social media, and covering breaking news stories, either by phone or going to the scene. Assignments may include covering general, sports, business or entertainment spot news or features.

Interns will contribute to the text news report – reporting and writing their own stories under the direct supervision of an editor. Editors will train interns on such areas as interview techniques, sourcing, databases and AP style.  Interns will be expected to become familiar with - and abide by - the AP’s statement of values and principles governing ethics.

Staff photographers will supervise interns on visual storytelling techniques. Where possible interns will accompany staff photographers on assignments, assist with arrangements in the field, and shoot photos. Interns will be trained in the use of photo editing software – Photoshop and Photomechanic – as well as transmission.  Training will include photojournalism ethics, especially on authenticity.

Interns will assist in the production of video stories, including non-linear editing and writing story summaries and scripts for broadcast. They will research and set up video news and feature stories and occasionally join location shoots, or do their own shooting, if they possess the required skills. Interns may also assist with content management and translations.  

Applicants must be:

1. Current full-time students within two years of earning an undergraduate degree or
2. Current full-time graduate students or
3. Students who graduated December 2011 or later.

• Must be able to show proof of legal authorization to participate in a 12-week internship in the assigned country prior to the start of the internship.
• Must have demonstrated proficiency speaking and writing in the English language and command of the local language for the assigned country.
• Good general knowledge of U.S. and international affairs.
• Good writing skills and the ability to recognize grammatical and factual errors.
• Relevant coursework or experience in a cross-format environment (text, video, photos, interactive graphics, etc.) is highly desirable.
• Knowledge of online and social media news venues.
• Highly organized and attentive to detail; able to multi-task and manage projects as assigned.
• Self-starter with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.

Application and submission materials:

• A 300-word autobiographical essay on this topic: “The Associated Press seeks to recruit and retain a workforce that embodies a wide range of talents, experiences, achievements and journalistic skills. Please describe the qualities and accomplishments you would bring to the company as an intern.”
• A resume and cover letter (please include your projected graduation date).
• Three to five examples of your work (links to a website of your clips, photos, multimedia work and video are preferred).
• Two letters of reference, one from a professor or faculty adviser on college/university letterhead and the second from a prior internship or employer.

Traineeship at European Centre For Modern Languages

The European Centre For Modern Languages (ECML) in Graz, Austria, has been offering traineeships since 1997. The scheme has proved a highly successful means of developing further contacts between the Centre and its member states. Recruiting young professionals from all over Europe to join its team for a short period both reinforces the Centre’s role as a place of international cooperation and promotes an atmosphere of intercultural learning. For the trainees it often represents their first experience of an international organisation. The scheme which the ECML now offers is the result of a learning process and is adapted to meet the needs both of the Centre and the trainees themselves. 

Duration & Traineeship Areas 
The ECML offers traineeships, lasting in general 6 months, twice a year. According to their field of interest applicants can choose the main area in which they would like to be involved (although the tasks will cover a wide variety of areas):
- organisation of events and meetings;
- documentation and resources;
- the Centre’s website;
- finances and general administration

Eligibility

Trainees should be graduate students preferably at postgraduate level. They should be plurilingual (English, French, German) and have adequate writing and computer skills as they will frequently be asked to translate official documents.

Allowance

Trainees receive an allowance from the Centre of approximately 686 Euros per month. This allowance is transferred by the Council of Europe at the end of each calendar month, i.e. if the trainee starts work on 1 July the payment will not arrive until 31 July. As this can be problematic at the start of the stay, particularly when a deposit and payment in advance is often required for accommodation,you will be offered a support facility to ensure that new arrivals do not have financial difficulties as a result of their traineeship.

A contribution of a maximum of 230 Euros is made towards travel costs from the trainee’s home country to and from Graz. Any travel invoices should be therefore be kept. Normally the reimbursement is made in two instalments – in the first and last month of the traineeship, together with the monthly allowance.

- 30 September for the period January to June of the following year
- 31 March for the period July to December and September to February for Administration trainees only.

Exchange Programme Eurodyssey

EURODYSSEY, the AER first programme, which was set up in 1985, aims at improving the chances of young Europeans to integrate into working life by offering them the opportunity of a work experience abroad. The Assembly of European Regions (AER), on the basis of the Founding Texts, implements the programme since its launch in 1985, in partnership with the Regions that are active in Eurodyssey. The AER is responsible for the general framework conditions of the programme as well as its general development and promotion.

Overview

Eurodyssée is an exchange programme between European Regions, which allows young job seekers aged between 18 and 30 to benefit from a traineeship placement abroad for a period between three to seven months.In a tripartite arrangement, the regional administrations that are members of the Eurodyssey programme will submit the young persons application and profile to potential employers of their network in order to find a work placement for him/her.

Objectives

1. to integrate young people from all horizons and educational backgrounds,
2. to gain professional experience,
3. to get an opportunity to improve their knowledge of a foreign language,
4. to put their social and cultural skills to the test,
5. to enhance their employability and facilitate their adjustment to the international labour market.

Accommodation
On arrival in the Hosting Region, either trainees are responsible to find accommodation (with the Region’s assistance) or the Region fully grants the accommodation. In the second option, trainees will be housed in one of the following (depending on availability):
- young workers hostel Student’s residence
- flat
- with a family

Financing 

- language course
- accommodation
- allowance or salary
- insurance cover

Trainees will either receive a grant or be paid a salary depending on how the Eurodyssée programme is run in the Region concerned. Bearing in mind the time the payment comes through, in some cases, trainees are advised to take enough money with them to cover their needs during the first month of the traineeship.

Insurance cover

An insurance policy covering personal accident, civil liability, and health and repatriation is taken out and financed for each trainee by the Eurodyssée general secretariat and the AER.

Monitoring

During their stay abroad, trainees are followed-up and assisted by the programme coordinators of the Hosting Region in dealing with all issues arising both at work and outside. Most Regions organise visits, excursions and events designed to help the trainees assimilate and appreciate the culture of the host Region. In the month following the end of the work placement, trainees must submit a report to their home and/or Hosting Region. In general, the traineeship certificate is issued subject to reception of this report.
