Mitrovica Winter University 2013

Mitrovica Winter University 2013 is an six-courses educational program which brings together local and international professors and around 150 students. This year, Mitrovica Winter University 2013 (MWU13) will be organized for the sixth time! We are looking for highly motivated students, who want to participate in the MWU13 and to make it an unforgettable experience. 

Mitrovica Winter University 2013 will be held in Mitrovica between the 21st of January and the 1st of February 2013. Continuing with the original format, the program for MWU13 will bring together local and international professors and students, providing an opportunity to learn and share experiences. Approximately 150 students can participate:  90 local students, 35 students from South East Europe and 25 from EU and beyond.

MWU 2013 offers 6 intensive academic courses of 2 weeks taught by international professors together with local professors. The courses will be cover different fields such as political, social, medicine, environment, economical science, art and information technologies. All courses will be taught in English, though some courses will be translated into Serbian.

The following courses will take place during the MWU 2013:

1. EU Enlargement and Migration
2. Emergency Medical Conditions
3. E–Marketing
4. Contemporary European Film and Production
5. Business Psychology and Management
6. Green Architecture and Urban Design
 

Successful participants will gain an official Certificate of the Mitrovica Winter University which includes between 3 to 4 ECTS credits.

The two-week courses are organized together with cultural excursions and a recreational program. In addition, public discussions, lectures and other interactive events on prominent issues in society will take place. MWU13 offers a unique opportunity to expand academic knowledge and skills, while enjoying an exciting international atmosphere.

Winter Innovation Academy 2013 session is divided into three parts:

1. Innovation and Entrepreneurship (2 days)

• How changes in technology paradigms give rise to novel opportunities (Xbox Kinect, Youtube cases)?
• How to identify, analyze and exploit these opportunities (Netflix, iPod cases)?
• How to design innovative products, to create sustainable competitive edge (iPhone case)?
• How to transform loose topics on technologies, opportunities, customers, markets to unique strategic business plans (Hilton, iPad cases)?
• How to transform these plans into focused execution while avoiding common mistakes (Procter & Gamble, Android cases)?

2. Business Model Innovation (2 days)

• What is a business model?
• What features should a good business model possess?
• How aggressively can a given business model distress other industry participants?
• Can I design a successful business model?

3. Designing Social Applications as Software-Intensive Products (1 day)

The major models that we study in the course are goal, role and domain models for problem domain analysis and interaction, knowledge and behavior models for design.The course is illustrated by examples and exercises of designing social applications, such as the apps for societal parking, healthcare, and grocery shopping.

Winter School On Federalism And Governance 2013

The Winter School on Federalism and Governance is a transnational project of the EURAC-Institute for Studies on Federalism and Regionalism, Bolzano/Bozen (Italy), the Faculty of Law and the School of Political Science and Sociology of the University of Innsbruck (Austria). Since its first edition 2010 it takes place under the auspices of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

The upcoming edition 2013 focuses on “Federalism and Fundamental Rights”. Federalism, regionalism, devolution, autonomy and other forms of territorial division of power are key tools for effective and democratic governance. They are often used to address fundamental rights issues, mostly in an effort to better promote and protect them, but also, in some instances, to limit them. The Winter School 2013 aims at better understanding such link from a multi-disciplinary academic and practical perspective, providing in-depth analysis and practical knowledge of the problems, the solutions and the instruments available in this field.

The first week of the Winter School (4-8 February 2013) takes place at the Faculty of Law and at the School of Political Science and Sociology, Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck, Austria. The second week (11-15 February 2013) takes place at the Institute for Studies on Federalism and Regionalism, European Academy Bolzano/Bozen (EURAC), Italy.

The application is open to young researchers and academics, post-graduate or undergraduate students, civil servants from a local, regional or national government as well as employees of international organizations or NGOs.

Among others, the following issues will be addressed during the training:

• To what extent is territorially differentiated protection of fundamental rights possible and even desirable?
• What fundamental rights are best suited to be developed differently in different parts of a state’s territory?
• What lessons can be learned from comparative practice?
• How can territorial settings improve the protection of fundamental rights? What do the international standards and practice have to say in this regard?

COSTS

The participation fee for the Winter School should be paid upon enrolment in November 2012:

• Option 1: € 700,00 – includes 13 nights-accommodation in a single room with breakfast.
• Option 2: € 550,00 – includes 13 nights-accommodation in a twin room with breakfast.

For participants from Innsbruck or Bolzano/Bozen (requiring only one week accommodation) the participation fee is reduced to 50%.

SCHOLARSHIPS
The organizers of the Winter School on Federalism and Governance will award a limited number of scholarships. The organizers distinguish between:

• “full scholarship” covering the accommodation costs plus breakfast for 13 nights in Innsbruck and Bolzano/Bozen (twin room) and a contribution towards the participants’ travel expenses (refund after the Winter School).
• “partial scholarship” covering only the accommodation costs in Innsbruck and Bolzano/Bozen (13 nights with breakfast, twin room).

To apply for the scholarship you have to fill in the application form (question about scholarship is included in the third part of the form).

Everyone can apply for scholarship, however, scholarships are limited. Preference will be given to students and to participants from overseas.

The scholarships will be awarded after all applications have been processed by  November 2012. Holders of these scholarships are requested to pay a participation fee of € 100 upon enrolment.

Benefits

A certificate of attendance will be awarded to participants attending at least 90% of all classes. Additionally, those who pass the final exam scheduled for the last day of the Winter School will be awarded 10 ECTS by the University of Innsbruck. These credits can be transferred to your home university if you are currently enrolled at another study programme. Please note that it is to the discretion of your home institution if and how many of these credits will be accredited to your university degree/CV. Further details regarding the final exam will be given with enrolment.

Participants will have the opportunity to submit a working paper after the Winter School (not compulsory!). The best papers will be considered for publication. Further details will be available during the Winter School.

International Student Festival in Trondheim 2013

Do you want to be a part of the world’s largest student festival? Apply for participation at ISFiT 2013 for an experience unlike anything you have ever known!

ISFiT is short for the “International Student Festival in Trondheim”. What the name does not say, is that ISFiT is also the world’s largest international student festival. ISFiT is arranged every other year, and each festival has a theme related to social and political topics with international relevance. The theme for ISFiT 2013 is global trade, and the festival is held from the 7th to the 17th of February, in the city of Trondheim, Norway. Here, over 450 students from all over the world gather to attend 17 different workshops and take part in the festivals culture program. ISFiT is a non-profit organization and is brought to life with the efforts of more than 400 student volunteers.

In addition to the workshops, ISFiT highlights the festival theme through a vast cultural program consisting of concerts, plenary sessions, art exhibitions, performing arts and ceremonies. The culture program offers an extensive range of events for the visiting participants, but is also available for the population of Trondheim.

ISFiT 2013’s vision is to create a better future for young people in the world. By being a meeting place where people can discussion and debate, ISFiT aims at fostering inspiration and being a starting point for international cooperation amongst students. Here, where friendships are made and valuable lessons learned, the participants can trade their ideas and visions.

If you are interested in participating in ISFiT 2013, you must fill in the application  form by the 30th of September 2012. Please note that you have to be at least 18 years old and a student at the time of participation.

When you apply for the festival, you apply for one of the seventeen different workshops, and you will be attending this workshop throughout the ten days of the festival. You can read more about the workshops here.

No fees are required to attend the festival itself, but all participants will have to cover the travel expenses to and from Trondheim.

ISFiT 2013 aims to have skilled participants with diverse backgrounds regarding geography, culture, class and gender. To achieve this goal, ISFiT 2013 will be able to offer some participants financial support. To apply for financial support, fill in the corresponding section of the application form. 

Please note that ISFiT 2013 only has a limited sum to offer, so we encourage you to search for alternative ways of financing your travel. Travel funds are only meant to cover travel costs to and from Trondheim and your home city. We do not have the possibility to fund visa costs. Travel support is only awarded to students who are invited and who attend the festival.

Applications will be read after the 30th of September, and those who are selected to participate will receive an invitation by e-mail. Instructions on how to obtain a visa and other formalities, will be given to the invited students. Due to limited capacity we cannot invite all applicants.

The United States Meets Europe: A Forum for Young Leaders

The United States Meets Europe is a network of likeminded individuals from across the world, who have an active interest in international affairs, cultural exchange, and the European-American relationship. Members can join the forum by taking part in a USAME Weeklong Seminar. The forthcoming USAME Weeklong Seminar will be held in Washington DC & New York on 3rd – 9th January 2011, and will focus on the following theme: “Beyond Mars and Venus: The Transatlantic Relationship in the New World Order.”

The Forum is aimed at young professionals and students, economists, diplomatic and political representatives, and civil society practitioners. The weeklong seminar will consist of lectures, seminars, workshops and panel discussions by leading figures from the fields of politics, diplomacy, civil society, academia, and the private sector, which will offer a range of perspectives on the issues at stake, the challenges ahead, and the new strategies and approaches being taken to address these challenges. The program will be complemented by cultural and social activities that will provide an opportunity to experience the diversity of the respective cultures and provide networking opportunities between the participants themselves, as well as between the participants and speakers.

Institute for Cultural Diplomacy

The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy is an international, not-for-profit, non-governmental organization with headquarters in Berlin, Germany. The goal of the ICD is to promote global peace and stability through strengthening and supporting intercultural relations at all levels. Over the past decade the ICD has grown to become one of Europe’s largest independent cultural exchange organizations, whose programs facilitate interaction between individuals of all cultural, academic, and professional backgrounds, from across the world. 

Previous events held by the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy include “A World without Walls: An International Congress on “Soft Power”, Cultural Diplomacy and Interdependence”, which marked the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.  In February, 2010, the ICD hosted the Berlin International Economics Congress: An Interdisciplinary Analysis of the Roles of Global Politics & Civil Society in International Economics. In May 2010 the ICD hosted The International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy 2010.

The Weeklong Seminar is open to students and young professionals with an interest in transatlantic relations, as well as international stakeholders from civil society, the media, the private sector, and international politics.

Winter School on Cross-Border Cooperation

The second edition of the Winter School on Federalism and Governance will take place from 31 January until 11 February 2011 in Austria and Italy (sessions: 31 January – 4 February – Innsbruck; 7 – 11 February 2011 – Bolzano) and will focuse on the topic of Cross-Border Cooperation (CBC). The Winter School was honoured by the patronage of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mr Thorbjørn Jagland.

Topics of the Winter School

The development of cross-border institutions, policies and instruments between neighbouring regions is a recent phenomenon of increasing importance. How to manage cross-border issues from a legal point of view? How to develop a transnational, cross-border civil service? How to create a common legal framework and cluster economies? The Winter School addresses these and other issues both from a theoretical and practical perspective.

Eligibility

The Winter School welcomes an international audience:

· young researchers and academics

· post-graduate or undergraduate students with basic knowledge on federalism, multi-level governance, constitutional issues and CBC

· civil servants from a local, regional or national government

· employees of international organizations or NGOs, dealing with CBC .

Program

Exciting academic 10-day programme on both sides of the Alps that offers:

· lectures by distinguished academics from different European countries;

· discussions, roundtables and case studies with experts from various administrations at local, regional, international and supranational level;

· institutional study visits, debates and public lectures with politicians and civil servants.

Successful participants of the programme are awarded 10 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System). The working language is English.

The first week (31 January – 4 February) takes place at the Faculty of Law and School of Political Science and Sociology, Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck, Austria; the second week (7 – 11 February 2011)

Accomodation

Accomodation for all participants of the Winter School will be booked in good standard guesthouses (in Innsbruck) and in modern students’ halls of residence (in Bolzano/Bozen) both quietly and centrally located. Both single and twin room accommodation are available on a first-come-first-serve basis upon enrolment.

The participation fee for the Winter School, to be paid upon enrolment in November 2010, is:

Depending on external funds, scholarships covering accommodation costs and/or travel reimbursement will be awarded. Holders of such scholarships are requested to pay the participation fee of €100 upon enrolment. Everyone is welcome to apply for scholarship. However, scholarships are limited as they depend on external funding.

Winter School "The European Convention of Human Rights"

Bologna University announces opening of its winter course “The European Convention of Human Rights: mechanism of protection and rights of migrants”, which will take place in January 2011.

The course aims to focus on two topics:

1. the functioning mechanism of the European Convention of Human Rights (submission of an application, conditions of admissibility, Court’s evaluation, judgments’ effects, surveillance mechanism on judgments’ implementation)
2. The role of the ECtHR on the protection of migrants and of people without a nationality.

Eligibility. Priority will be given to students and practitioners, who have alternatively: a first level degree/ a degree attesting a study programme of at least 3 years/ CV certifying a specific background on human rights plus listening ability  in French and English. The course capacity is 30-50 people.

Winter School „Time and Temporality: Categories, Models and Narratives“

Winter school "Time and Temporality: Categories, Models and Narratives" - a degree course co-sponsored by the Estonian Graduate School of Culture Studies and Arts (GSCSA) and the Centre of Excellence in Cultural Theory (CECT) will take place at the University of Tartu, Estonia, on January 31, 2010 - February 6, 2011. Participants will be awarded 5-9 ECTS credits.

The first winter school of the Estonian Graduate School of Culture Studies and Arts focuses on time and its conceptualization, the categories and typologies applied. Time is a theme that unites individual experience, social dynamics, research fields and disciplinary histories. Temporality represents an aspect common to all research and a concept that provides an opportunity to look for inter- and transdisciplinary connections.

The programme of the winter school consists of: 1) joint interdisciplinary lectures and seminars conducted by Estonian and guest lecturers; 2) two days of specialized workshops outside the customary classroom environment; 3) student workshops where graduate participants present and discuss their own research.

For students the connecting question for the subtopics of the winter school and a starting point for their essay is “The treatment of time and temporality in my research”. Interpretation of this subject may emanate from specific questions about their research and its conceptual field of time/temporality, or include aspects of disciplinary history.

Students are expected to do preparatory reading in order to participate in the seminars and to present their research during student workshops. The final assignment of the course is an essay (3000 words, by March 14, 2011). Upon full participation in the study programme and completion of the essay students will be awarded 9 ECTS points (5 ECTS without an essay). The essay will be considered for publication.

Ukrainian Winter School 2010

Second Ukrainian Winter School 2010 “WINTER GOES ON!”, February 15-26, 2010

Fee: 249 Euros for two weeks

Eligibility: all interested

The 2-week Ukrainian intensive course is created according to ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe) requirements and has communicative orientation. It mixes the language learning with unique Ukrainian cultural traditions, folk and modern songs, games, dishes, and so on. You will have the time to visit most interesting places in Lviv (National Art Gallery, Opera Theatre, ancient mountain High Castle, Open Air Museum…).

There are groups (up to 5 students) due to three levels: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced. The entry test helps to check your knowledge. The study program is flexible depending on student level and wishes as well. It includes developing your oral, writing, reading and listening skills.

You can choose an appropriate accommodation for you. The organizers cooperate with some hosting Ukrainian families for quite a long time and have good opinions from the students who lived there. Practically all the family apartments are in the very center of city, about 5-30 minutes to the teaching place on foot. You will have a separate room. A simple breakfast is included in the accommodation fee. The sum about 9-11 EURO is normal for one night in Lviv in a hosting family.

The Ukrainian intensive course fee for two weeks is 249 Euros. It can be paid upon arrival.

The school fee includes:

• study process, tutorials

• hand-outs and a certificate

• introduction to Lviv excursion

• a “survival file” (Lviv map, useful information, a program, a notebook, a pen etc)

• coffee breaks

Why in Lviv? — Because Lviv is:

• ancient and the most interesting Ukrainian city for tourists

• really Ukrainian speaking city

• located not far from the west Ukrainian border

• not an expensive city

• has unique multicultural traditions: combines the Ukrainian, Polish, Austrian, Germans, Armenians, Jewish and others cultures

• modern and progressive city with up-to-date shops, restaurants, cafés, theaters, cinemas, universities…
