PhD Scholarship in Culture at Giessen University

Giessen University's International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC), funded by the German federal government’s Excellence Initiative, invites applications for one of up to 13 PhD scholarships for a three-year, structured PhD-programme in the study of culture. With its excellent research environment, a doctoral programme which is tailored to the needs of PhD students and the intensive personal support it provides, the Graduate Centre offers doctoral researchers optimum conditions for their PhD-projects and custom-made preparation for the time thereafter, both with regard to academic and non-academic careers.

The PhD scholarship period starts on October 1, 2013 and includes a monthly stipend of approximately €1,468 (plus family allowances when applicable). Scholarships are offered for one year with the possibility of two extensions, each of one year. The GCSC supports young researchers with families; appointees with children under the age of twelve are eligible for renewals of up to four years. 

Acceptance of a scholarship requires participation in the study programme and wide-ranging events offered by the GCSC, as well as active involvement in at least one GCSC graduate research group. PhD scholarship holders must register as PhD students at the Justus Liebig University. There are no tuition fees for doctoral students at the JLU, except for an enrolment fee of approximately €200 per semester. All scholarship holders are expected to assume residency in or near Giessen.

The GCSC expects scholarship holders to:

• Research a dissertation project that contributes to the GCSC’s research profile* and can be supervised at the Justus Liebig University
• Actively participate in one of the GCSC’s research areas* by initiating, coordinating and documenting collaborative research projects, such as conferences or publications
• Participate in the GCSC’s curriculum

The GCSC offers a research-intensive environment and comprehensive multi-tier supervision at all stages of a dissertation project through e.g. interdisciplinary research colloquia and professional support in preparing academic papers and conferences. The GCSC Teaching Centre offers systematic qualification in HE teaching; opportunities to teach at the BA level are available. 

Eligibility

We invite applications for contributing to the study of culture in various historical contexts as well as those analysing contemporary phenomena. An international research perspective i.e. international study experience is an advantage. The GCSC encourages applications from graduate students who have or expect to obtain a first or upper second class honours M.A.-degree (or equivalent) in one of the GCSC’s academic subjects* or in the arts/humanities, cultural studies, or the social sciences. The GCSC’s working languages are German and English, and applicants must be fluent in at least one of them; knowledge of both is an advantage and should be acquired during the scholarship period.

The GCSC focuses its research within the following Research Areas*: Research Area 1: Cultural Memory Studies | Research Area 2: Cultural Narratologies | Research Area 3: Cultural Transformation and Performativity Studies | Research Area 4: Visual and Material Culture Studies | Research Area 5: Media and Multiliteracy Studies | Research Area 6: Cultural Identities | Research Area 7: Global Studies and Politics of Space | Research Area 8: Cultures of Knowledge, Research and Education.

In addition, the GCSC is currently establishing working groups organized around “emerging topics” that are expected to contribute to the research spectrum by establishing and strengthening links to neighbouring disciplines. Initial working group activities have bridged the study of culture with the fields of economics, ecology, life sciences and law.    

Application Procedure and Deadline

The main selection criteria are the candidates’ academic qualifications, the academic quality of the research proposal and the suitability of the project for the GCSC’s research programme. Short-listed candidates will be invited to a 30-minute interview.

Scholarships for University Graduates From ENP Countries

The EU (European Commission/DG Education and Culture) offers a large number of scholarships to university graduates coming from European Neighbourhood Policy countries for post-graduate studies at the College of Europe (Bruges or Natolin (Warsaw) campus) during the academic year 2013-2014. These scholarships cover academic expenses, accommodation, meals and travel costs.

 

The eligible countries are: Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Egypt, Georgia, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Moldova, Morocco, the Palestinian Authority, Syria, Tunisia and Ukraine.

Selection Procedure:

1. Candidates are requested to visit the website of the College www.coleurope.eu and check the necessary information under 'Postgraduate Programmes' and 'Admission': admission requirements and language requirements.

2. Candidates have to register and apply online (Admission/apply online).

3. Candidates have to print the application form and send it by post to the Admissions Office of the College of Europe (address : Dijver 11, BE-8000 Brugge) with the requested documents.

4. After the deadline, all applications will be evaluated by the study departments at the College of Europe and a preselection will be made. Preselected candidates will be invited for a (telephone) interview with the Professors/assistants of the department(s) they have applied for. Hungarian Government Scholarships for International Students

Hungarian Scholarship Board Office offers scholarships for foreign students and lecturers in higher education institutions as well as research fellows who intend to gain further professional experience in Hungarian higher education institutions or research institutes. Scholarships can be applied for in two different ways:

1. Work plans and bilateral agreements: The Office of the Hungarian Scholarship Board (hereinafter HSB) welcomes applications by citizens of countries (and territories) that have a valid/effective educational work plan with Hungary, or a bilateral agreement signed by the Hungarian Ministry of National Recourses and the relevant ministry of the given country (or territory). Dissemination of all information regarding the application procedure and deadlines as well as assessment and shortlisting of applications is conducted by the scholarship authority or the Ministry of Education in the relevant home country (or territory). Applications forwarded by partner scholarship offices shall have a priority. However, applications submitted directly to the HSB Office shall also be accepted in the framework of the Pool system outlined below.

1. Scholarship Pool: In 2005 the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Hungary established the ‘Scholarship Pool’ allowing for applications for all HSB scholarship types from the following countries/territories:

Scholarship

The following scholarships are available in the academic year 2012-2013:

A. – semester/partial studies (3-10 months)

Available for: undergraduate (BA/BSc) and graduate (MA/MSc) students (enrolled at foreign higher education institutions), especially those majoring in Hungarian Language and Literature and students participating in a single degree track university programme (such as General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmaceutical Studies, Veterinary Studies, Architecture, Studies in Law, etc.). Before application, students are required to have completed minimum two semesters at their home institutions. For ‘Type A’ scholarship students may apply only on one occasion during their Bachelor’s studies, and once during their Master’s studies.

B. – postgraduate studies, research (3-21 days or 1-10 months)

Available for: applicants holding a Master’s degree or an equivalent university degree, including PhD students who intend to do research for their dissertation and wish to stay in Hungary for less than 10 months. (However, PhD students cannot earn credits during the scholarship period at the host university.)

C/1. – full PhD programme (36 months)

Only students proficient in Hungarian can apply. The scholarship is conditional upon successful entrance exam / admission to the respective doctoral school.

C/2. – partial PhD studies (10 months)

Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD programme at an accredited higher education institution in their home country or in a foreign country (but not in Hungary).

D. – postdoctoral studies, research (1-10 months)

Applicants must hold a PhD or an equivalent degree.

E. – research stay (3-21 days or 1-10 months)

Available for associate professors or high-ranking academics as well as researchers holding minimum a PhD or an equivalent degree.

F. – summer courses in the summer of 2012 (2-4 weeks)

Only courses published in the list of ‘Summer Courses 2012’ on the HSB website can be selected. You may select three different courses but your scholarship will allow you to participate only in one course.

• Foreign citizens with a residence/immigration permit or in the course of applying for such a permit in Hungary
• Foreign citizens with permanent residence in Hungary
• Foreign citizens employed on a permanent basis as defined by the Hungarian Labour Law
• Students in employment applying for part-time or correspondence study programmes
• Students applying for programmes not financed by the Hungarian State
• Students admitted to higher education host institutions where tuition fee is required.

Danish Government Scholarships 2012

The Danish Government Scholarships under the Cultural Agreements

The Danish Government Scholarships under the Cultural Agreements are aimed at highly qualified exchange students and young researchers who wish to immerse themselves in studies of the Danish language and culture or other fields of study related to Denmark, such as design, architecture, environmental studies, and other related fields.

These Danish Government Scholarships are offered to students from a number of European countries and students from Russia, China, Japan, Israel and Egypt. The Cultural Agreements both comprise scholarships for long-term study periods and summer languages courses to foreign students. The Scholarships under the Cultural Agreements for the study year 2012-13 can be applied for from November 2011 and onwards until February 28^th 2012.

Danish government scholarships for highly qualified non-EU/EEA students

Danish higher education institutions receive a limited number of government scholarships each year to fund highly qualified full-degree students from non-EU/EEA countries and Switzerland.

In order to be eligible for a scholarship you must be:

• a citizen of a country outside the EU, the European Economic Area or Switzerland
• enrolled in a full degree higher education programme
• granted a time-limited residence permit in Denmark due to education

You are not eligible for a Danish government scholarship if you are:

• seeking admission to a university level institution of arts, design and architecture
• have a legal claim to the rights of Danish citizens
• have been granted a residence permit at the time of admission by the Danish Aliens Consolidations Act §9c, subsection 1, as the child of a foreign citizen who has been granted a residence permit in accordance with the Danish Aliens Consolidations Act §9a, and who is a citizen of a country that is not acceded to the EU or covered by the EEA agreement
• a student who is eligible for a grant in accordance with Danish Law regarding the State Education Fund

The scholarships are administered by the Danish higher education institutions, each of which decides which students will receive a scholarship. For further information about the government scholarship, please consult the admission details of the higher education institution of your choice.

Please note: The government scholarship consists of two parts and can be given as full or partial tuition fee waivers and/or grants towards covering your living costs. Kirkland Scholarship Program 2012-2013

The Polish-American Freedom Foundation - Founder of the Lane Kirkland Scholarship Program, and the Polish – U.S. Fulbright Commission - Program Administrator, announce an open competition for candidates from Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, as well as Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan for the Lane Kirkland Scholarships in the 2012-13 academic year.

The Program is addressed to young leaders, holding MA university degrees, who are determined to be actively involved in the development of democracy, economy and civil society in their countries and the region. The program includes two semesters of study at Polish universities and 2-4 week professional internships in public and private institutions.

• up to 35 years of age (in special cases up to 40)
• Polish language proficiency adequate to effectively attend lectures and seminars and prepare a diploma thesis, or, alternatively, English - for those candidates who select a specific study program with English as language of instruction (in such cases only basic Polish is required)
• minimum 2 years of professional experience

PREFERENCES:

• candidates actively working in their professional and social fields
• candidates who have significant achievements in one of the fields listed above
• candidates who have not studied in Poland yet

TEEME Fellowships 2012

The EACEA (The Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency, funders of the programme) will award 8 Fellowships for 2012 entry (Category A: 5; Category B: 3). In addition, all EMJDs are invited to compete for further Category A Fellowships in the Western Balkans/Turkey window.

To be admitted to the programme, candidates must present convincing outlines for research projects that are comparative and interdisciplinary in conception, that bear a clear relation to present needs and debates, and that span at least two different linguistic, religious and/or ethnic cultures within Europe, or that relate one European with one non-European culture, in the period 1400 to 1700, or in later political or cultural uses and representations of early modern literature and history. A project on Shakespeare, for instance, would be expected to look beyond formal or philological questions focused on individual plays and consider instead wider cultural issues, such as the relations between the plays and specific historical, social or intellectual dynamics in Europe and beyond, or perhaps Shakespeare’s impact on European, American, African or Asian cultures. 

Eligibility Criteria

Category A Fellowships: These Fellowships are awarded to doctoral candidates who come from a country other than an EU member state or associated countries and who are neither residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in the EU. The only exception to this rule applies to doctoral candidates who have previously received an Erasmus Mundus masters scholarship in order to follow an EMMC - such students are eligible under this Category. (Note: 'EU member state or associated countries', for the purposes of this Category, includes all EU member states, the EEA-EFTA states Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, plus Turkey, Switzerland, and the Western Balkan countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia).

Category B Fellowships: These Fellowships are awarded to doctoral candidates who do not fulfil the Category A criteria listed above. Candidates from the EU will have to apply under this category.

Western Balkan/Turkey window: There may be one or more additional Category A Fellowship available for candidates from Turkey or the Western Balkan countries (Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia).

All Erasmus Mundus Fellowship holders on the TEEME programme will benefit from Fellowship contracts covering monthly allowance, holidays, parental leave, social security and pension rights. Health insurance will be provided free of charge by the consortium for all doctoral candidates on the programme.

Details of the Fellowship contracts, including the amount of the monthly allowance, will be available soon. Fellowship holders can expect a monthly net contribution towards their living expenses of c. 2000€.

Other funding options

Candidates will be eligible to apply for targeted research grants as well as partially or fully funded studentships other than Erasmus Mundus at all four partner universities. Specifically, Kent offers a number of PhD studentships each year in all participating departments to both EU and overseas candidates and supports all research students with a minimum allowance for research expenses each year; the Dahlem Research School at FU Berlin offers a range of travel and mobility grants, as well as start-up and completion scholarships to postgraduate students, both EU and international; Porto participates in a variety of national funding schemes to which researchers can apply for small research grants, short-term scholarships and travel expenses; and at Prague students will be able to apply for the grants offered by the Charles University Foundation (GAUK). In addition, students will receive support and guidance to apply for any further funding for which they may be eligible in their home countries.
 

Fees

You do not need to hold an Erasmus Mundus Fellowship to study on TEEME. Applicants who have been offered a place on the programme but were not awarded a Fellowship will have to cover the programme fees (5,000€ p.a. for EU students and 8,000€ p.a. for third-country students) through other means. Erasmus Mundus Fellowship holders do not have to pay these fees as they are included in their EU grant.

Weidenfeld Scholarships and Leadership Programme, University of Oxford

The Weidenfeld Scholarships and Leadership Programme cultivates the leaders of tomorrow from transition and emerging economies by providing outstanding university graduates and young professionals with the opportunity to pursue fully funded graduate studies at the University of Oxford and access to a comprehensive programme of leadership development, long-term mentoring and networking.

Overall, the programme provides Scholars with the knowledge, skills and international networks necessary to contribute optimally to public life in their countries and regions of origin and to build lasting professional linkages across cultures and continents.

The Weidenfeld Leadership Programme includes:

• an annual ten day long Leadership and Public Policy Seminar including conferences, moderated discussions and workshops on political philosophy and leadership development;
• practical skills training in public speaking, conflict management and decision making;
• an annual European Study Tour;
• engagement in the Institute’s projects and conferences;
• an annual Weidenfeld Debate;
• a public policy analysis training for a selected group of Scholars long-term professional mentoring; and
• a myriad of networking opportunities throughout the year.

The programme is managed by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD). The ISD is an independent think tank working with leaders in government, business, media and academia to develop multi-country responses to the major security and socio-economic challenges of our time and to enhance Europe’s capacity to act effectively in the global arena.

Activities include research, specialised task forces, high level policy briefings, scholarships and cross border networks that foster leadership and stability across Europe and its wider neighbourhood, actively bridging inter-communal, religious, socio-economic and political divides.

Applicants should be intending to return to their country of ordinary residence following their studies.

This scholarship may not be held in conjunction with any other awards. Students currently at Oxford are not eligible to apply unless they are already a Weidenfeld Scholar. Part-time courses are not eligible for the Weidenfeld Scholarships and Leadership Programme.

This scholarship is open to candidates studying for all degree bearing courses, with the exception of PGCert and PGDip courses.

What does it cover?

100% of university and college fees, and a grant for living costs (the rate in 2011-12 was £13,500).

Awards are made for the full duration of a student's fee liability for the agreed course. If your scholarship is offered for a course lasting more than one year, the continuation of your scholarship each year is subject to an annual renewal process based on satisfactory academic progress.

How do I apply?

Apply at the same time as you apply to Oxford by selecting Weidenfeld Scholarships and Leadership Programme in the Funding Section of the University's Graduate Application Form. Candidates should apply by Application Deadline 2 (6 January 2012 for Medical Sciences and Philosophy; 20 January 2012 for all other subjects).

In order to be considered for this scholarship, you must submit your application for graduate study by the January deadline (20 January 2012) and you must have secured a place on your chosen programme of study by the expected final decision date (16 March 2012). Applications with an outstanding admissions decision after this date, or applications which are re-evaluated against the later March deadline field, are not eligible for scholarship consideration.

You must also complete a Weidenfeld Scholarship Questionnaire and upload it together with your Graduate Application Form by the application deadline in order for your application to be complete. 

If you do not apply in full by the deadline, you will not be considered for the scholarship, even if you have selected Weidenfeld Scholarships and Leadership Programme on the Graduate Application Form.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an expenses-paid interview weekend in Oxford in early May 2012.

UniCredit Study Abroad Programme

UniCredit & Universities Foundation launches a new competition for 8 grants "UniCredit Study Abroad Exchange Programme" aimed at all university students of economics or finance for a period of six months of study exchange programme abroad to/from Serbia and Russia.

To be eligible for the competition, applicants must be a citizen of one of 22 countries where UniCredit is present and be a university student in the fields of economics or finance in at least her/his 2nd year of study.

Moreover, candidates must:

1) either be enrolled at any university in a country in which UniCredit is present and be wishing to spend six months at a university located either in Russia or in Serbia
or:
2) be enrolled at a university located either in Russia or in Serbia and be wishing to spend six months abroad at any University in a country in which UniCredit is present.

The grants are aimed at financing exchange periods abroad for six months, starting from January 2012 and ending March 2013.

Each winner will receive a grant of  EUR 4,200 (gross of taxes) for the whole period and an economy return flight ticket will be fully paid by the Foundation.

Candidates may only apply using the application available online. In the application, each candidate must indicate a list of maximum 3 host-universities where she/he intends to spend the exchange period, choosing only those universities with an exchange agreement already signed with the home university.

Applications may be submitted until 15 November 2011. The eight winners will be announced by 15 December 2011.

Rochus und Beatrice Mummert Foundation Master’s Scholarships

The Rochus und Beatrice Mummert Foundation sponsors High Potentials from Central and South Eastern Europe in the fields of economics, business administration, engineering, natural sciences or tourism management. The Program includes, amongst others, a scholarship for 2,5 years for a Master degree at the University of Cologne, the German Sport University Cologne or at the RWTH Aachen. The scholarships are offered within the Robert Bosch Stiftung. Within the programe a 4-5-month internship (usually in the summer semester of the 2nd academic year) a management education is included.

Requirements for a Mummert Scholarship:

Joint Master’s Programme in South-Eastern European Studies

The Universities of Graz, Zagreb, Belgrade and Skopje are pleased to announce the call for applications for the new Interdisciplinary Joint Master’s Programme in South-Eastern European Studies. This two year MA programme is offered as a joint degree between the four partner universities commencing in the autumn semester (from October 2011).

The Interdisciplinary Joint Master’s Programme in South-Eastern European Studies was developed as a part of the JoinSEE Tempus project and it is run by four consortium members (University of Belgrade – Faculty of Political Sciences (Serbia), Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje (Macedonia), Karl-Franzens-University Graz (Austria), University of Zagreb (Croatia)) and six partners for the purpose of student (and staff) mobility: University of Bologna (Italy), University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), University of Novi Sad (Serbia), University of Poitiers (France), University of Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), South East European University in Tetovo (Macedonia).

The mission of the Interdisciplinary Joint Master’s Programme in South-Eastern European Studies is to provide an international and interdisciplinary master’s programme in social sciences and humanities of the highest quality, which enables participants to effectively understand the interrelationship between law, politics, economics and culture with strong emphasis on the regional dimension of South-Eastern Europe. The master’s programme promotes the capacity for scientific analysis, especially by applying an inter- and transdisciplinary approach which includes areas of legal, political, economic and cultural studies. One of the aims of the programme is also to strengthen the gender sensitivity of students. The master’s programme prepares students for further PhD studies and professional life in a variety of fields.

Students enrol in and spend the first year at their home university:

In the second year, students spend at least one semester at a partner university. In addition to the four consortium partners (Graz, Zagreb, Belgrade and Skopje) a number of other universities shall accept mobility students within the framework of the joint degree programme including the universities of Bologna, Ljubljana, Novi Sad, Poitiers, Sarajevo and South East European University, Tetovo.

The Interdisciplinary Joint Master’s Programme in South-Eastern European Studies seeks to provide an international and interdisciplinary master’s programme in social sciences and humanities of the highest quality which enables participants to effectively understand the interrelationship between law, politics, economics and culture with a particular emphasis on the regional dimension of South-Eastern Europe. The programme prepares students for doctoral studies and professional life in a variety of other fields including work in international, local governmental and non-governmental organisations, journalism, business, scientific research, and consultancy.

Eligibility

The Interdisciplinary Joint Master’s Programme in South-Eastern European Studies welcomes individuals holding an academic degree of at least 180 ECTS credits (bachelor’s degree or equivalent programme of at least 180 ECTS) who can demonstrate a grounding in social sciences or humanities, (e.g. law, political science, sociology…) and who have some general insight in South-Eastern Europe (the Balkans).

* certificate/diploma obtained at the undergraduate level (notarised translation into English)

* transcript of records obtained at the undergraduate level (notarised translation into English)

* letter of motivation (statement of purpose)

* proof of proficiency in English language: IELTS (required minimum score: 6.0), a TOEFL (required minimum score: 210 on the computerized test, 547 on the paper test, 78 on the Internet test), a Cambridge Exam (required level: FCE) or an equivalent certificate

Prospective students should apply by post to the institution they wish to attend. Admission to the home university for successful applicants is, upon request to the legally competent body, a separate process according to the local procedures for enrolment. Students begin their studies at the start of the following academic year.

Students completing the Interdisciplinary Joint Master’s Programme in South-Eastern European Studies earn the degree “Master of Arts”, abbreviated MA. The joint degree is awarded, signed and stamped by all four partners (subject to the specifications of the home university).
